Salzburg is an awesome jumping off point for a 3-4 day loop through the Alps. You can hit Salzburg first, then over to Innsbruck, back through Kitzbuhel, Bad Gastein, Zell Am See, Hallstatt, then either back to Salzburg or just jump on the highway to Vienna. I've been in May a couple times and it's incredible.
Skiing wise - there is an area ski pass (SALZBURG SUPERSKICARD) that also covers Saalbach & Hinterglemm which is well worth a day or two and is reached by bus in the centre of Zell am See - there is a fantastic ski circus starting by going up the "Schönleitenbahn" at the town of Vorderglemm just before Saalbach.

I'm like 50 km away from Zell am See right now! I've just been to the largest ice cave in the world near Werfen. Really worth a visit if you ask me.
